Ghosts

Ghosts by Henrik Ibsen
Directed by Sian Davis

Ghosts posterIt should be a happy day in Mrs Alving’s household, on the day of her son’s return from Paris and the eve of the opening of an orphanage dedicated to the memory of her late husband, Captain Alving.

However, as final preparations are being made with Pastor Manders, old family secrets unravel the perceived identities of the key players. The late Captain was not all he was assumed to be and his son Oswald takes after him in more ways than one.

In a rigidly structured society the consequences are nothing short of disastrous.

This drama is one of Ibsen’s most powerful works, but also one of his most controversial.

Originally set in the fjords of Norway, director Sian Davis has set the play in the early years of the 20th century, in a sound – perhaps Lyttleton Harbour – on the South Island.
