Talking Heads

Talking Heads

By Alan Bennett.

Three of English dramatist Alan Bennett’s award-winning series Talking Heads will be presented in three-only performances at Mairangi Players by MSM Theatre.

The pieces are A Lady of Letters, in which a busybody pays a price for interfering in her neighbour’s life; A Chip in the Sugar, wherein a man’s life begins to unravel when he discovers his aging mother has rekindled an old flame; and Bed Among the Lentils, in which a vicar’s wife discovers a semblance of happiness in an Indian shop owner.

Alan Bennett’s extraordinary portraits of ordinary people have earned him a place as one of the most gifted, versatile and important contemporary writers, offering razor-sharp wit and deeply felt humanity. His acclaimed film The History Boys was recently showing at cinemas. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay for The Madness of King George.

A critic wrote “Bennett’s genius is his ability to satirize humanely. In his hands, the tragic and the painful are close bedfellows with the funny and the sexual”.

Staging the show is MSM Theatre comprising Auckland performers Maxine Burgham-Page and Sue and Max Golding, with Dugald Page as designer.

Maxine Burgham-Page has a background as a professional singer/actor who has latterly concentrated more on acting, and Sue and Max Golding have long histories as actors with a variety of Auckland and North Shore theatre groups.
