State of the Play

"State of the Play" by Roger Hall. Directed by Sian Davis.

Preceded by the more familiar 'Glide Time" and 'Middle-age Spread', 'State of the Play' was first performed at 'Downstage' (Wellington) in 1978,  and thereafter by every other 'pro' theatre- it enjoyed huge popularity with audiences of the time. All  Hall's familiar comic elements are present but its humour is often lacerating, and its frivolities balanced by much too serious purpose.

Set in a classroom in a school in a small provincial town  during a single weekend , a playwriting course is being run by a famous, but disillusioned and disengaged, playwright. His 'privileged' students are: an English Language teacher, a housewife, a librarian, the local dentist, and a young man with theatrical ambitions and high expectations.

The play has aged well, still has relevancy, and - director Sian Davis believes - will be equally as popular with audiences today.
